Independent Adoption Center Breaks 500 Families’ Hearts

They were our hope where we poured our hearts and tens of thousands of dollars. We trusted them. We relied on them. We invested in them. However, with one email they announced that they were closing. There was no notice: not to us, not to the employees, not to any of the other waiting families or to the birth families. They were just gone.

Last week our adoption agency (Independent Adoption Center) was considered one of the premier agencies in the country. They were established in open adoption, pioneers in the field of open adoption. After months and months of research, we chose them. And we trusted them.

This week they will cease to exist, as will our home study and our funds.

As devastated as our family is, we have it so much easier than many of the other 500+ families who were also betrayed by this sudden closing. We have lost money and time. But we had paused our home study to welcome our biological son, Felix, into our home.

There are families who have been waiting for over 3 years who have yet to be matched. There are matched families who are now in limbo. There are birth families who will not receive the counseling and support that they were promised when they placed their children. There are counselors who were told to vacate their offices without the time to even contact their clients. Over 500 families and the employees of the IAC are left in shambles.

Shame on whoever is responsible for such an act.

Please pray for the former clients of IAC. We are left feeling violated, lied to, and robbed. So many life-savings are left empty. So many arms are left empty. So many hearts are broken.

I cannot begin to imagine the pain this causes. Prayers to your family, and all the families this “agency” victimized.

Thank you so much, Felicia. The entire community is still in shock at what happened. This “agency” is officially filing today for bankruptcy. It is deplorable what has happened to these families in their hopes of becoming parents.

Sorry to hear about this.. ❤

  3. Wow, being an adoptive mom , this struck a cord. This is horrible. I’m so sorry. Hoping there will be a good outcome for everyone. This happens so often unfortunately. Praying for all affected. You are really getting tested these last few months. You must be doing something right! Keep writing and trusting in God.

I can’t even begin to imagine the heartache you and these families are experiencing. To put so much time, energy, money, and faith into a company, and then have the rug ripped right out from under the feet of these sweet families is just despicable. I’m so sorry Casi! I so hope things work out for these families. 😦

  6. Wow. I am so incredibly sorry to read this. We have been in the adoption process for over 3 years and I know the ups and downs that are involved. Then to have this happen…. I am so incredibly sorry. I will definitely be praying for you and all of the other families that have had their worlds turned upside-down.

Thank you so much. I am praying for y’all as you continue your journey. Adoption is certainly not for the faint of heart. I send so much love you and your family as you continue on. ❤ ❤

  7. How heartbreaking, I could not even imagine having to go through this. Adoption was such a beautiful blessing for my family but it’s taxing under the best of circumstances. It makes me so thankful for how amazing our agency was and how simple our adoption ended up being. My husband and I chose a small well known agency in our home town over a large agency and I truly believe that decision had everything to with how amazing our journey ended up being. I how you don’t mind me posting but if anyone wants to know about our journey please check out my blog the twins life. https://wordpress.com/posts/thetwinslife.wordpress.com

Thank you. I love connecting with other adoptive families. We will most likely go through a small agency this time too. Thank you for sharing! I can’t wait to connect further!

  8. Where is this agency located? You’ll have to keep us updated on any current news. I work in the MH field, closely with DHS and these stories just break my heart.
