Library Story Time: A Summer Tradition
19June 5, 2012 by CassieCravings
Some of my favorite summer memories growing were going to Story Time at our local library. There were songs, poetry readings and beautiful picture books read by an animated Mrs. Reads-A-Lot. Shelf after shelf was loaded with endless possibilities and adventure. I could barely stand under the weight of the must-have books to check out for the week.
A couple of decades later, I get to pass this tradition onto baby Eli. I have had the summer session of Summer Story Time circled in my planner for weeks. I adore reading. I crave for my son to have such a passion.
This morning we squeezed into a bright and noisy room. Toddlers bounced about the room. And at the front stood Mrs. Reads-A-Lot. She was just as animated, just as magical and just as loving as I remembered.
Eli looked at me nervously as we walked in. He shyly settled into his seat. He peered at the bolder toddlers dancing about the room. It took a few minutes, but he warmed up. Soon he was giggling and clapping his hands. By the end, he was sitting on the floor as close to the books as he could physically be.
After Story Time, I walked Eli down the aisles of books. He kept saying, “So cool! Mama, count ‘dem! I read ‘dis one!” We settled in floor every few steps to read a new book. Sometimes I would read to him. Sometimes he would “read” to me.
We read about the jungle and about our favorite big red dog. We read about sharing and about feelings. We poured over books for nearly an hour.
I finally declared, “Last one”. We read that book extra slowly, taking in every colorful illustration and giggling over every page.
As we left, my little one said, “I come back to ‘da lib-burry, Mama? I read to yous again?”
Only six more days until the next Story Time, and I am counting down.
How cool! As a parent I want to instill that love of reading in my boys. I hope and pray it stays will them.
Thank you!
I completely agree! I hope that he is always so excited to read. 🙂
Wednesdays are our library days and you are so right it’s so much fun for the kids…now if my girls are naughty I tell them no library and they love it so much, they say “i no nutty again” lol.
Awww! Sweet things! My mom could certainly punish me with the threat of no library books that week. That was tragic to my little book worm heart.
Great idea! You inspired me to look up the time and day for our librarys reading time. Not sure how Ian will do at his age setting still, but he loves books. Jefferson has special guest readers, and crafts every Wed at 10:30
Oh how fun!! There are kids at this Story Time that are about Ian’s age. I like that it is geared towards toddlers, so it’s okay if they act…well, like toddlers.
I wanna come to Jefferson and do crafts!!
I loved the library as a kid, too! Still love it now! And I really love that my boys are excited to go to the library! We make a big deal of picking our books and checking them out! The hardest part is that they never want to take them back when it’s time! 🙂
I haven’t let Eli know he can take them home yet. I’m afraid that he won’t want to take them back….that’s how I was as a kid anyway. 🙂
You are smart – I introduced this concept way too early! 🙂
Added you on my list for the Reader Appreciation Award! 🙂
Thank you so much!! 🙂
Love Story Time! There are weeks when I can’t wait the six days and I take mine to an “open” story time at a different library near our house.
Gasp!!! Two Story Times a week! Now that would be fun! 🙂
I love reading the things eli says. Such a sweet spirit in that little boy! You are doing so good by him, Mama! A love for reading is one of the best gifts you can ever give. 🙂
Thank you so much!
I’m sure all moms think this about their kids, but my little man is an absolute gem! He is a sensitive and loving soul.
I hope that he’s a little book worm just like his mama. 🙂
I’ve nominated you for the sunshine blogger award: http://drawingroomdays.wordpress.com/2012/06/08/bring-on-the-sun/

Thank you so much! What a blessing! 🙂
You’re very welcome 🙂
